Beijing Capital International Airport

Beijing Capital International Airport ( Chinese:北京首都国际机场 ) is located in the northeastern suburbs of Beijing, China, 25 kilometers from the center of Beijing and 67 kilometers from Beijing Daxing International Airport to the south. It is one of the earliest large airports in China. The airport began construction in June 1955 and was completed in 1958.

Beijing Capital International Airport has three terminal buildings with an airport area of ​​3657 acres / 14.8 km². It has a total construction area of 1.41 million square meters.

In 2019, the annual passenger throughput of Beijing Capital International Airport was 100 million, ranking first in Asia and second in the world. The cargo and mail throughput was 1,955,300 tons, and the number of takeoffs and landings was 594,000.

History

  • In 1950, the airport construction plan was put forward, but the project was temporarily suspended due to the start of the Korean War.
  • On June 10, 1955, the airport construction project officially started.
  • In December 1957, the airport was completed and passed national acceptance.
  • On March 2, 1958, the airport was officially put into use, and it was the first civil airport in China. When the airport was built, there was only one small terminal, called the airport south building, which was mainly used for VIP passengers and chartered aircraft.

  • In August 1974, the second large-scale expansion of the airport officially started, and it was listed as a national key project in China.
  • On January 1, 1980, the T1 terminal, apron and parking lot in front of the airport with an area of 60,000 square meters, were completed and officially put into use.
  • Beginning in 1988, the T1 terminal area has undergone seven reconstructions and expansions. In these seven reconstructions, the T1 terminal area has rebuilt the baggage sorting hall, expanded the main building and approach bridges, and increased the area of the terminal building. To 80,000 square meters, the passenger throughput guarantee capacity will be increased to 8 million.
  • In March 1988, “Capital Airport” was officially renamed “Beijing Capital International Airport”.
  • In October 1995, the airport began construction of the T2 terminal building, which was listed as a national key project.
  • In October 1999, Beijing Capital International Airport Co., Ltd. was formally established.
  • On November 1, 1999, the airport terminal T2 was officially put into use. At the same time that the T2 terminal was put into use, the T1 terminal began to be out of service for renovation.

  • In March 2004, the third large-scale expansion project of the airport started (including the T3 terminal). On September 20th, the T1 terminal, which was refurbished at the airport, was put into use again, dedicated to carrying China Southern Airlines flights.
  • On February 29, 2008, the T3 terminal building and the new runway were completed and put into use in preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
  • On September 26, 2019, Beijing Daxing International Airport opened. Together with Beijing Capital International Airport, it will bear the growing passenger flow in the Chinese capital in the future.

Terminals

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 opened on January 1, 1980, with ten gates and relatively small scale. Until 1999, this was the only terminal at the airport.

After the transformation, the total construction area of the terminal building is about 78,000 square meters, the annual designed passenger throughput is about 9 million passengers, and there are 17 security check channels. On May 20, 2008, China Southern Airlines and other airlines transferred to Terminal 2 for operation, and HNA Group independently operated Terminal 1.

Terminal 2

In October 1995, the airport began construction of the T2 terminal building, which was listed as a national key project in China. On November 1, 1999, the T2 terminal of the second phase of the project was put into use.

The main body of the T2 terminal building is 336,000 square meters, with 16 supporting projects, including the terminal apron of 464,000 square meters, as well as parking buildings and freight stations.

After the completion of the terminal area expansion project, the annual passenger throughput of the airport can reach 35 million, the peak hour passenger throughput can reach 12,000, and the annual takeoff and landing can reach 193,200.

Terminal 3

In March 2004, the airport began construction of the T3 terminal. In December 2007, the expansion project was completed.

The T3 terminal cost 27 billion yuan (US $4.2 billion), with a total construction area of 986,000 square meters. The building area of No. 3 main building is more than 580,000 square meters, with a single-story area of 180,000 square meters, with five floors above ground and two floors underground.

The T3 terminal was put into operation in two phases on February 29 and March 26, 2008.

Special Terminal

The special flight terminal of Beijing Capital International Airport is located on the west side of T3 terminal. In 2003, it was designed by the China Aviation Design Institute through a tender.

On October 31, 2006, the terminal was officially opened, with a construction area of 6,600 square meters and a construction cost of 600 million yuan.

The building is mainly used for government travel and official activities such as receiving visits by foreign heads of state and government. The business jet terminal of the airport is located on the southwest side of the special flight terminal, with a construction area of 1,900 square meters. It was opened on July 27, 2008.
