History

Papua New Guinea discovered oil in the Mananda oil field in 1991, but oil transportation in this area is very difficult. For economic benefits, the Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge was jointly funded and constructed by 4 oil companies. They are Petroleum Resources Kutubu, Oil Search Ltd, AGL Gas Developments and Merlin Petroleum. Petroleum crossed the bridge for the first time in March 2006 and reached full capacity a few months later.

  • In January 2004, the design of the Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge began.
  • Construction of the bridge began in December 2004.
  • In November 2005, the bridge was completed.
  • In March 2006, the bridge was officially opened and the oil was pumped through the pipeline for the first time.

Technical parameter

Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge Deck height is 1,289 ft (393 m). Tota length is 1,542 ft (470 m). Bridge body height is 108 ft (33 m). The width of the south side of the bridge is 285 ft (87 m).

The Hegigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge is supported by 3 suspension cables, 2 horizontal lines and 1 vertical line.

As the southern mountain is relatively short, a 108 ft (33m) high tower was built to keep the two ends of the bridge level, and the suspension cable to the north is directly connected to the ground rock, eliminating the need to build a tower.

There is a base station on the north side of the bridge that can park a helicopter.

It was the highest bridge in the world from November 2005 to 2009, until the Sidu River Bridge in China surpassed it.
