Duge Bridge

Duge Bridge official name is The First Beipanjiang Bridge (Chinese:北盘江第一桥), originally called the Nizhu River Bridge or Beipanjiang Bridge.
It is a special bridge connecting Puli Township, Xuanwei City, Qujing City, Yunnan Province, and Duge Town, Shuicheng County, Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province.
 
The total investment of the project is 1.028 billion yuan (US $146 million).
  
Duge Bridge is famous for its height exceeding Sidu River Bridge, setting a record for the world’s highest bridge.

Design Parameters

The Beipanjiang Bridge has a total length of 1341.4 meters. The length of the spans is “80 meters + 2 x 88 meters + 720 meters + 2 x 88 meters + 80 meters”; the longest span is 720 meters.
The height of the bridge tower on the Guizhou side and the Yunnan side is 269 meters and 247 meters, the vertical distance from the bridge surface to the river surface is 565.4 meters, and the vertical distance from the top of the bridge tower to the river surface is 740 meters;
There are 112 pairs of 224 cable stays in the bridge.

It adopts the two-way four-lane expressway standard with a design speed of 80 km / h.

building structure

Duge Bridge main bridge adopts double-tower and double cable plane steel truss cable-stayed bridge. The main beam adopts a steel truss structure composed of steel truss and orthotropic steel bridge deck. The main truss adopts Pratt structure.
The weight of the main and side spans of the dead load and live load is balanced by the weight of the concrete filled in the concrete access road and the main truss chord.
The upper end of the stay cable is anchored to the steel anchor beam in the upper tower column, and the lower end is anchored to the steel anchor box of the chord on the main truss.
The bridge tower adopts H-shaped reinforced concrete structure.
Bridge tower foundation adopts group pile foundation.

Construction history

  • In 2012: the Ministry of Communications of China established the Duge Bridge (Duge Bridge) scientific research project, which was led by Guizhou Expressway Group Co., Ltd.
    There are four other participants. They are CCCC Highway Planning and Design Institute Co., Ltd., Southwest Jiaotong University, Guizhou Provincial Highway Engineering Group Co., Ltd., and CCCC Second Navigation Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd.
  • In 2013: Duge Bridge started construction and was jointly built by Yunnan Province and Guizhou Province of China.
  • On September 10, 2016: Duge Bridge completed the construction of the bridge.
  • On December 29, 2016: Duge Bridge was opened to traffic.
  • In 2017: “Duge Bridge large-span steel truss cable-stayed bridge construction and maintenance management key technology research” passed the acceptance.

Technical characteristics

The First Beipanjiang Bridge Bridge is located in the deep mountain area on the border of the plateau. It crosses the river valley and cuts the 600-meter-long Beipan River “U” -shaped canyon. The terrain is very dangerous and the geological conditions are very complicated.

Local geological disasters occur frequently, and the severe natural climate environment such as wind, fog, rain, and freezing poses a severe test for the structural safety and operation of large bridges under the conditions of wind resistance and freezing rain.
In the construction, the bridge has always adhered to the minimum degree of destruction and maximum protection throughout the design, construction, and operation of the bridge to achieve the construction goals of low cost, low pollution, and low energy consumption.

By carrying out centralized drainage of bridges, pushing construction of main bridge side spans and the application of 500 MPa high-strength steel bars, the impact of bridge deck sewage on soil and water systems is minimized, the occupation of land resources is greatly reduced, and the reinforcement of on-site ties To facilitate construction and achieve the goals of energy saving, consumption reduction, emission reduction and sustainable development.

 “Smart” concrete

During the construction of Duge Bridge, engineers developed an intelligent “concrete”, whose scientific name is “mechanical sand self-compacting concrete”, which can automatically flow and evenly fill the space in the mold to ensure quality and save construction costs.

Cloud computing technology

The designers of The First Beipanjiang Bridge Bridge used cloud computing technology to develop a bridge management and maintenance integrated information platform integrating “construction, management and maintenance”.

Through the sensors installed on the bridge, the data such as the tower and bridge deck of the bridge are transmitted to the bridge basic information cloud and the bridge monitoring and maintenance information cloud, and then the analysis and decision cloud analyzes the previously transmitted data and sends the data to the manager ’s Mobile phones and tablets.

Scientific research achievements

Guizhou Highway Group, the participating unit of Duge Bridge, has applied for 13 patents, 3 construction methods, 2 sets of technical guides and 6 software copyrights.
Duge Bridge completed the scientific research project of the Ministry of Transport of China during the construction process, providing a new construction technology and method for the erection of large-span steel truss cable-stayed bridges in mountainous areas. 4 patents and 7 utility model patents.

Honorary Recognition

In 2018, Duge Bridge won the “Nobel Prize” at the 35th International Bridge Conference-Gustavs Gold Award.

Record set

Certified by Guinness World Records Co., Ltd., Duge Bridge won the title of “The World’s Highest Bridge” and is included in the history of the World Records.
As of December 2018, Duge Bridge was the world’s largest cable-stayed bridge with steel truss beams.

Ticket fare

Beipanjiang Bridge is part of the Hangrui Expressway, and the single toll for small passenger cars from Puli Toll Station to Dug Toll Station is RMB 20 per trip.

Architectural significance

Duge Bridge is a control project of the Hangrui Expressway in China. The completion of the bridge ended the history of Xuanwei and Shuicheng Expressway. The travel time between the two places was shortened from more than 4 hours to less than 1 hour.


The bridge effectively improves the traffic conditions between China’s Yunnan Province, Guizhou Province, Sichuan Province, Chongqing City and the outside world.
